The Woodturners' Shop
The Woodturners at Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre provide visitors with the possibility of seeing a range of traditional wood-working tools and skills in active use. Staffed by a group of members of the West Sussex Woodturners Club, the Woodturners Hut is home to numerous historic woodturning lathes, associated tools and equipment. There is also a very modern woodturning lathe on which club members demonstrate the craft of woodturning. We are also happy to answer any questions posed by visitors about the craft. The West Sussex Woodturners, like so many people at Amberley Museum, are volunteers who believe in preserving the industrial heritage and culture of the South-East. Their work at Amberley (and at other venues), ensures that once widespread but now largely abandoned craft skills are remembered and passed on to future generations. |
Special Days At regular intervals throught the year the museum arranges children's activities days. On these days (usually around Easter, during the summer /half term holidays and on the Christmas Santa Fun Days) the woodturners help children to turn a wooden toy. These days are extremely popular with children and parents alike. Indeed such is the interest in woodturning that these days have generated that it has encouraged the woodturners to plan a a purpose built training centre alongside the existing hut. Planning permission has been obtained and fund- raising is underway for the new building which will be used for both training (particularly aimed at children) and education purposes and to host the existing children's activity days. If you are interseted in this project please contact the webmaster. Thank you. |
