Meeting Report - Sunday 7 th May

Jim Young opened the meeting with a reminder of the precise rules of engagement for next month?s goblet competition (in this newsletter, last month?s newsletter AND the Website!) and introduced Jimmy Clewes (on DVD) and our very own Dave Dean (in the flesh) to give us inspiration for said competition.

Secretary Tony Matthews then reported that we had received an invitation from the Surrey Association of Woodturners to attend their Open Day on Sunday 29 th October. There will be Trade Stands and two Open Competitions; one for individuals (£1 entry) and one for a Club table (max 10 items, made within the year, £5entry). It was agreed that we would accept the invitation (venue near Camberley) and that Tony will update us on details nearer the time.

We were then able to learn from and compare the performances of Jimmy and Dave at their identical lathes. Jimmy started with a clear advantage since his lathe was obviously connected to a power supply. Dave?s was obviously not! However, JY came to the rescue and soon Dave was catching up?. Well, until, quite out of character, Ted H. started barracking. I am sure Jimmy looked down from the screen disparagingly; Dave on the other hand, under closer pressure, of course, responded by instantly turning a non-captive ring! After the restart Dave went from strength to strength, passing on tips and encouragement and was clearly the star of the morning. Many thanks for your entertainment and guidance, Dave; much appreciated.
