Meeting Report - Sunday 4 th June

Meeting Report

Jim Young opened the meeting by congratulating the competition entrants on the standard and number of the pieces on display. This was very gratifying for the organisers and the demonstrators who had shown us the way.

Secretary Tony Matthews passed on a contact received via our website from the manufacturers of Vacuum Chucks. It has to be recorded that the level of discount on offer was not greeted by a sharp intake of breath... Tony was also able to confirm that the Surrey Association of Woodturners Open Day is going to take place on Sunday, 29th October; 3 or 4 other clubs have confirmed support. Tony will publish the exact rules of engagement in due course.

Our thanks go to Paul Edwards and Ted Hickford for their efficient judging and follow up comments and Caroline Dorling for running the show. It was clear that the demonstrations of turning long stemmed goblets had been taken to heart by members, and that lead demonstrator on the subject, David Dean , practices what he preaches! Perhaps he talks to himself too?

During the judging and coffee break experienced turner and new member John Muddle was introduced by Jim Y and displayed examples of his very impressive work and chatted about them with members.

Miscellany

Don Pollard reports that the Library now holds details of Members of the Register of Professional Turners, courtesy of Peter Coxall , one of this distinguished group.

Web Browsers in the club might like to seek advice from this website: http://www.woodturningonline.com/Turning/Turning_projects.html which David Peffers says has some broad project headings which take you to lists of specific projects with detailed illustrated instructions. Projects range from the simple to complex and David admits that he found the Goblets topic helpful in landing his top spot in this month?s competition! There is one on Segmented Turning ...

Ron Wicks was upbeat on the Amberley operation, but would be even happier if the August rota were fully booked. He also promised to keep us informed on the progress of the production of TV programme about the history of furniture making and the contribution of the pole lathe.

Future Program

Next Month (Sun July 2nd) will be a "Members Day". Bring in pieces that have proved a challenge and a resident expert will offer advice – and practical help on the lathe if appropriate. Also we will have at least one expert offering assistance on the sharpening front.
