Meeting Report
Jim Young and Tony Matthews opened a busy meeting with a number of notices:
- Tony Twine, force majeur, has become a "regular" at St Richards Hospital and suggests that Club members may wish to provide turned items for sale to save the hospital from even further depredations. Public spirited members to phone Tony on 01403 782667 for more details or send their offerings directly to St Richards (attention of Chris).
- August 27/28/29 at Wakehurst, Jim Young (01273 494719) has table spaces and application forms.
- Reminder of Open Competition on 29 October, Tony Matthews has application forms.
- AGM will be at the October meeting, some nominations received, further forms from Tony please.
Meeting Activities
This was a practical morning. Charlie Martyn dazzled all with his demo of segmented turning; especially important to us mere mortals were the hints and tips for the preparation of segments. Members have reason to be grateful for his patience and skill during a long and eventful morning.
Ever the enthusiast, Dave Dean took a turn on the grindstone, coping with even the most gigantic scrapers while Jim Young twiddled prettily and effectively with home made tools and converted OBO pins. Peter Brown showed how turning and the use of imagination can produce exquisite butterflies and other non symmetrical pieces. Altogether a valuable and instructive meeting.
Amberley
Ron Wicks reported that the October roster was out and still has a few vacancies. He also has received a request from a lady who would like to have made a circular chess board with circular "squares" and surrounding decoration. Anyone willing to rise to the challenge please contact Ron.
For Sale and Wanted
Jim Young (01273 494719) still has a large supply of wood to dispose of.
Joan Hughes (widow of ex member) has a substantial metal turning lathe to dispose of (requires 2 strong men). Any Hercules interested please contact Peter Watts who can be contacted on 01903 772870.
Next Meeting (September 3rd)
Our segmented/laminated woodturning competition. No rules except that the entries must match the title. During the judging members could be entertained by go-go dancers or a party political talk but the committee cannot decide which, so it may be neither!
P.S.
Many thanks to Jim and/or Judy Reed for producing this month's Newsletter.
P.P.S.
Ian Rodger left his brief case ('old style, brown leather') in the hall after the last meeting. It has sentimental value and if anyone has news of its whereabouts, please contact Ian by Email ; I have no telephone number on my list..Mark H.
