WSWT Newsletter – January 2007
Monthly Meeting held on Sunday January 7th
Announcements
With his usual panache our Chairman brought the well attended meeting to order
at 09.30. Ted had received letters of appreciation from the relatives of John
Marshall, a stalwart of the Club, who died suddenly soon after our December meeting.
He also brought to our attention an article in a recent edition of 'The Woodturner'
lavishly illustrating our Turner of the Year Competition and winners.
Jim Young reported on the latest position at Wakehurst. It seems that no decision
has been made regarding dates for 2007 because Wakehurst is still searching for an
Events Manager. Jim expected to have some news in a couple of weeks. Still on the
'sales at shows' theme he has located a relatively cheap scheme allowing the use of
customers credit cards at shows. He will be reporting further after more detective work.
Elizabeth Greenfield: First Aid/Resuscitation
Don Pollard then introduced Elizabeth Greenfield who is a Voluntary First Aider (St Johns),
a member of an Ambulance Service First Response team and a recent recipient of the Ambulance
Service Voluntary Award for her work in resuscitating a young child.
Her talk and demonstration on First Aid and Resuscitation focussed on looking after heart
problems and had the audience literally mesmerised with her demonstration of a portable
defibrillator ('every home should have one') and the vitally associated technique of CPR
(cardiac pulmonary resuscitation). Taken together, the technique and foolproof equipment
are potential lifesavers in cardiac arrest and heart attack situations. Her straightforward
approach and clearly demonstrated expertise dispelled many of our half remembered preconceptions
of heart problems and first aid treatment; the current best practice seems to be 'keep it simple,
act quickly and with energy'.
A flood of questions followed and we were loth to let Elizabeth go. Ted proposed to leave a box
for voluntary donations at the door to add to the Club's donation of £50. Subsequently it transpired
that by this means a further £149 was added to the Club's donation. Elizabeth was thrilled, and
asked for her thanks to members to be reported through this Newsletter. Best info on this subject
can be found on the British Heart Foundation's website
Jimmy Clewes new DVD deal
Our respected Treasurer, David Parfoot, has a list of members who have asked to purchase these DVDs and sternly requires prepayment of £31 for the boxed DVD to reach him by no later than Jan. 20th — he will bulk order on the 21st!
Membership
Sad to report that Member Laurie Baker from Amberley, who came to our meeting, will not be attending any more due to ill health. He will be keeping his lathe active for the moment.
Miscellany
Jim Young, once he has disentangled his lathe from his new house, will want to sell it (lathe,
not house!). It's a two horse monster, a Turnstyler, anyone interested please open negotiations
with Jim direct.
Member Rhonda Speer has a tutor at Crawley College who wants to sell a substantial planer
table. More info from the lady herself.
John Cook (01903 520965) has such a wonderful family that at Christmas he received two
chattertools. Not being ambidextrous he would be happy to part with one of them.
Peter Watts has visited the Aldingbourne Trust
(email them)
who have a very large stock of recycled timber for sale. They are at Blackwell Lane, Norton,
Chichester, PO18 0JP near the Fontwell roundabout.
Our events man, Don Pollard, is looking for a volunteer to understudy Bill Whittaker
in handling the video camera during Club demonstrations. Full training given to any aspiring David Lean!
Ron Wicks told us an inspiring fairy tale about his quest to repair a lady's spinning wheel
with wood gathered from like minded woodmen in New Zealand. Hope he didn?t prick his finger!
Two recommendations — samples of Abranet clog free abrasive cloth were passed round (and possibly
lost!). £20 for a lifetime pack but our shop sleuths are hunting for a cheap source. Also a DVD
by Mike Hanbury on turning platters and boxes has been highly praised.
Next Meeting
On Sunday February 4th, our own Denys Dollin will be demonstrating box turning. Not to be missed.
