Meeting Report Sunday October 7th 2007

Annual General Meeting

The AGM proceedings will be recorded for posterity by our new Hon. Secretary, Jim Reed (of the Jim and Judy partnership). Bon chance J and J! We will just note here that our chairman Ted H. reported a successful year, thanked all those who had made it possible, with extra thanks to Tony Matthews our secretary of the last 5 years. He had also confessed to the committee’s unauthorised purchase on our behalf of an additional lathe (a bargain at £1,000) that the meeting, to his obvious relief, agreed to. The officers, with the exception of the secretarial change, were re-elected as were the general committee members.

Subs remain at £20, but members are reminded that these must be paid by the December meeting at the latest.

Following the AGM

Don Pollard demonstrated how to sharpen cabinet scrapers of various shapes and sizes and founder member Peter Coxall gave us insight into the club’s early raison d’etre. Peter then talked us through a range of his work from flowers through candlesticks and a clock, to stools and chairs, challenging us all to widen our horizons. He concluded by pulling an inspirationally turned monkey out of a hat! (well, bag). The editor feels inspired to turn a replica of said monkey that he is minded to call &ellip; not quite sure &ellip; but how about Ted?

Future Events

Next Club Meetings: November 4th has professional turner Les Thorne on thestage. December 2nd is an ‘open’ i.e. any item competition, probably with mince pies thrown in AND a surprise presentation&ellip;

Turner of the Year will be held in Sullington Village Hall on Friday Oct 19th at 7 for 7.30. Members are expected to bring some food with them; drinks will be provided – the first will be free! Anyone can go for the Richard Pay Cup, with up to 4 items; the Bill Hughes Cup is a single item competition for novices – defined as a member for less than three years.

The WakehurstPlace autumn event is weekend 20/21st October. Jim Young is coordinating as usual.

Surrey Association’ Show is at the Mytchett centre (near Farnborough) on Sunday, October 28th (admission £2) and includes demos by Dave Reeks and Les Thorne. Opens at 10.30 am.
Exit junction 4 on M3 – A331 towards Guildford for 2 miles; leave dual carriageway on slip road signed Mytchett. Continue on Coleford Bridge road to pair of miniroundabouts. Turn right at both. Centre is on right, accessed by right turn in front of the garage.

West & Sons’ Show at their site at Selham is a regular feature in early May. This year some WSWT members helped the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain man their stand – and as a result Keith Greenfield has received an invitation for us to do our own demo! Space provided free. Keith stressed it is a demo/exhibition, not a sales pitch. Anyone interested in helping – contact Keith.

Miscellany

A Mr. Morgan (Findon Valley) has some blocks of mahogany and lengths of yew for sale. He wants about £25. (01903 873014)

Member Tony Short is looking to take over the ‘Tool Shop’ from Peter Arthur. He would welcome ideas / views on what sort of items we would like him to stock. Contact him at the next meeting, on 01444 243492, or by email.

Programme Organiser, Don Pollard, would also like to hear from members – with ideas about topics for review while competitions are being judged, particular techniques they find problematic, news of new professionals on the circuit – and, of course, from people willing to talk about or demonstrate their turning skills. Again, contact him at meetings, ring him at home on 01903 529619 or by email. If you have a great idea at 3 am or similar, he would prefer an email!!!.

We will be publishing the 2008 programme in the November Newsletter.

That?s all folks. Do yourself a good turn before the next meeting!
