Meeting Report – Sunday 6th July.

Announcements

The Chairman congratulated Peter Coxall and David Newson on returning to the fold so soon after recent orthopaedic work; local surgeons are (it is rumoured) extra careful before operating on woodturners, checking bevel angles as well as sharpness of their instruments prior to their use.

Ron Wicks is looking to field a sales team at the Worthing Craft Festival to be held 23th–27th July inc. in the Methodist Church Hall on the corner of The Steyne and Brighton Road. Good secure facilities are available (£40 total) and if he gets sufficient support he will coordinate.

Don Pollard announced that the September meeting (which clashes with the Amberley ‘Wood from the Trees’ event) will now have Jim Young and Allan Fielding turning natural edged bowls and Ray Jackson on hand to reshape/sharpen tools. (The Editor is delighted at Ray’s involvement – his favourite spindle gouge has ‘gone off’ since Ray’s last demo).

Don then went on to lead a discussion on the streamlining of the judges’ commentary on competition days. It was agreed that detailed comment would be confined to the top three items in each class, but that the total marks of all entries would also be announced. It was also stressed that the judges would be happy to discuss items with their creators.

Dave Dean then took the stage with a wide brief (that’s Dave!) and an emphasis on composite turning. He defined this as using more than one medium, one of which must be wood. We have recently seen pewter used as an embellishment; Dave used black plastic as a contrast! During the course of Dave’s presentation we saw him turning rings to size from planks/sheets, getting into a muddle with double sided tape (message, don’t use too much!), using a two component glue to very good effect and making his own ‘button chuck’. He also showed us how we might remount small items to turn off bases more professionally – careful use of insulation tape being a key part! All Dave’s preparation and stage-craft was backed up very well by projectionist Bill Whittaker. Many thanks to both for an enjoyable and informative morning.

Next Meeting

Professional turner Greg Morton is demonstrating at the August meeting – Sunday 3rd. This is an all day demo!
