WSWT Newsletter - October 2008
AGM & Meeting Report, Sunday, 5th October
The AGM proceedings will be formally recorded by Secretary Jim Reed; suffice to say that the club officers, being eligible and prepared to continue in their roles, were all re-elected unopposed. Peter Brown and John Woolgar are new to the committee; re-elected were Terry Rowell, Keith Greenfield and Dave Dean. The first meeting of the new club year will be on Dec 1st, 7.30 at Ted’s!
On the financial front, membership costs remain at £20. Because the November Meeting has been cancelled (hall repairs) payment can now be made at the December meeting. However, Treasurer David Parfoot would prefer to receive your cheque by post a.s.a.p at 11, Lynchmere Avenue, Lancing, W. Sussex, BN15 0PD.
Composite Competition
What a fine array of entries on a tricky subject – and a real challenge for judges Dave Dean and Terry Rowell! Their deliberations threw up a unique situation for the club - a grandfather / granddaughter tie (for 3rd beginners slot) - Ron with a biplane; Georgia with a railway engine!

Dave and Terry were delighted with the quality of the entries and insist on congratulating competitors through the newsletter. They are also conscious of the fact that several entrants missed out on the post mortem and so they will be available with their notes at the next (DEC!) meeting.
Club Notices
NO NOVEMBER MEETING due hall repairs.
Don Pollard will be standing down as events organiser a year from now and would be delighted to guide a newcomer to the role during the coming season. Anyone like to volunteer?
Robin (the pen) Read has found an interesting magazine from the USA. The annual subscription is $33 (+ $33 postage outside the US) for the paper version or $25 for the Internet version. Website - http://www.morewoodturning.net
I attended the funeral of Don Baker recently. A member for several years in the 90’s he came to our meetings with his wife Jackie. Although on frequent dialysis for years he maintained his lively disposition and many interests following an early retirement from the Fire Service.
In spite of (or because of?) being computerless at present, Amberley coordinator Tom Bradbury was in a buoyant mood. Their big weekend had gone well and the Museum has approved plans to provide a new workshop, although money raising will be a major challenge!

Future Events
The December meeting will be an open competition - which means that reasons for not taking part are much reduced. Each entrant decides what to enter; the judges have the more difficult task of unravelling the variety!
Jim Young and others are hoping that the Wakehurst Place event (18th/19th Oct) will have better weather than the August weekend!
Next years programme is now available here
Secretary Jim Reed sent this notice for publication which remains unaltered, except for italics. “Reminder to all members to attend Turner of the Year evening 7.30pm on Friday 24th October – bring your partner, a small succulent offering and enjoy good wine, good company, the wisdom of our TOY judge and the chance to cheer all our 2008 prize winners.” Well, my partner is coming even though she cannot be described in quite those terms… and now I sense trouble!
