Meeting Report Sunday October 4th, 2009

Annual General Meeting

Vice-Chairman Jim Young called the meeting to order (standing room only since the hall was littered with lathes set up for the day?s demos). He reminded members that the first function of the day would be to hold a rapid AGM before we all get down to woodturning. Main topics of the AGM was the report on the accounts and treasurer David Parfoot presented a very clear summary of our financial position, advising us that we need not dip into our pockets for any sub increase for next year and that we still have a full house and a waiting list. Jim Reed carried out the Election of Officers informally and the current mafia consisting of Jim Young, Jim Reed, David Parfoot, Caroline Dorling, Terry Rowell, Tom Bradbury, Don Pollard, Keith Greenfield, Dave Dean, John Woolgar and Pete Brown were commissioned to carry on for another year. Member John Stepney bravely undertook to shadow Don Pollard, our Programme Secretary, with a view to taking on the role in 2011 and was voted onto the committee, proposed by Pete Brown and seconded by Terry Rowell. Question of Chairman for 2010 yet to be resolved as outgoing Chairman, Ted Hickford has decided not to stand after a successful 9years in office. His will be a challenging act to follow!

Tom Bradbury reported on an outbreak of amity at our “outstation” at Amberley Museum and it may be that a bigger, better woodturners’ palace may be constructed close to the present hut under plans for revitalising the woodyard area of the site.

The day’s demonstrations

Before the shavings started flying young Tom Streeter, our junior star (all of 13) gave us a Powerpoint presentation of his weekend as a guest of AWGB, learning at the feet of some powerful professionals in our trade. Easily the youngest in his group he did very well, earning the title ?little Les? after one of his mentors Les Thorne. The work he produced was circulated around ? some of our old hands blanched with envy! Hopefully Tom?s interesting illustrations will appear on the Club?s website very soon.

Two lathes were running during the morning; on one Pete Brown demonstrated the turning of elaborate spinning tops and pretty candle holders while on the smaller machine our smaller demonstrator, Tom, proved a dab hand at offset turning of finials. Thanks to both for an absorbing morning.

Notices and Miscellaneous

Jim Young wants to bring to your attention the work of professional Tony Handford (website), a hollow form specialist. His website is well worth a visit.

Turner of the Year Competition ? Friday Oct 23rd 7pm Sullington Village hall

This is our prestigious social event of the year. All members welcome but bring some cocktail type eats, we will provide the drinks! For those new to the Club this competition is the only one to be judged by an invited non-turner. This year our guest judge will be a professional figure artist, so there?s a clue for you ! The rules are simple :- bring along up to four choice pieces and the judge will pick the three she would wish to take home with her (but she wont!). There is also a beginners section for beginners who have entered at least three of our monthly competitions during 2009. Also at this meeting we will be presenting all the competition awards for 2010. Bound to be a glittering evening.

Programme for 2010

Is now available on this website. As usual the dates fall on the first Sunday of each month (EXCEPT: April 11th, the previous Sunday being a Bank Holiday.
